Stunning Lantern Festival (Loi Krathong or Yi/Yee Peng) In Chiang Mai. Every year for the November full moon, million of lanterns are released into the sky of Chiang Mai, while candles are lighten up all around the city. It's also the time for Krathongs (floating baskets of flowers pinned into a piece of banana trunk) to be floated on the Ping River Chiang Mai every year in November.

    What is Songkran?

Songkran is the occasion for family re-unions, temple visits and annual house cleaning. Many Thais observe the holidays by spending time with families and friends. Traditionally, Thais perform the Rod Nam Dum Hua ritual on the first day of Songkran, which is officially the National Elderly Day. During the ritual, young people would pour fragrant water into the elders’ palms as a gesture of humility and to ask for their blessings.

The second day of Songkran is officially the National Family Day. Families would wake up early and give alms to the monks, then ideally the rest of the day would be spent sharing quality family time together. An important religious ritual on Songkran is ‘Bathing the Buddha image’, in which devout Buddhists pour fragrant water over Buddha statues both at the temple and at home. More religious Thais would engage themselves in Buddhist ceremonies and merit-making activities throughout the holidays.   Quelle

Songkran ist das thailändische Neujahrsfest (offiziell vom 13. – 15./16./17.

Thais lieben alles, was ästhetisch ist.

    👉  Visakha Puja

    Video May 2022:

      Video Oktober 2024:
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2024 (3 - 11 October 2024) The Phuket Vegetarian Festival has won the prestigious 'Grand Pinnacle Award 2024' and has been officially recognized as a 'World Festival and Event City' for 2024 by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA). When the main festival starts, a crowd of worshipers, all dressed in white or yellow, gather at Jui Tui Shrine in Phuket Town for the first event marking the ceremony’s opening: a giant bamboo pole rising to invite divinities to come down to earth. The devotees wear bright and very ornamented outfits, and then you are set for a full week of firecrackers, parades, piercings, and vegetarian food. Each day of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, processions start from one of the leading shrines around Phuket island. Thousands of people will pay respect to their ancestors. During this week, everyone follows ten principles: mostly wear white, do not eat meat, drink alcohol, do not have sexual activities, etc.

      Video Oktober 2022 (Corona):

Images include sacred shapes, creatures, and Hindu gods, with phrases that are believed to empower the wearer. The tattoo artists often use human hair and bone in the creation of their inks, and chant magical incantations as they tattoo with a sharpened metal rod. There are three categories of yantra tattoo, which are supposed to give power, protection, and influence. The person with the tattoo must follow certain rules in order for its powers to work properly.

In Thailand, everything is connected to Buddhist culture, including their traditional tattoo, Sak Yant. Sak Yant given by monks or masters are believed to bestow mystical powers, passing down till today, it has become a combination of Buddhism and art. Modern Sak Yant improved by senior monks are said to offer benefits such as good fortune, power or charisma. We followed A Long, an amulet dealer from Guangzhou, to visit some Sak Yant masters, and then went to the annual Wai Khru ceremony which turned out to be even wilder than any metal music festival. The tattoo wearers, so-called the disciples would come to the ceremony once a year to pay tribute to their masters, some of them got possessed by deities and went on a rampage, it was really a hardcore scene to see.

      Video November 2022:
A city in Thailand laid out plates of fruits, desserts and vegetables on Sunday for thousands of monkeys as a token of appreciation for attracting foreign tourists to the city after a pandemic-induced lull. Led by businessman Yongyuth Kitwattananusorn, workers and tourists dished out two tons of fruit and vegetables worth over 100,000 baht ($2,801.91) at the annual buffet for about 4000 macaques living on the streets and inside the Phra Prang Sam Yod temple complex in downtown Lopburi. The hungry macaques were jumping and clambering onto the fruit trays as they picked up their favourite morsels, which was a highlight for some local and foreign tourists. The festival was started in 1989 by Yongyuth as a way to boost tourism in the province, which is home to the 10th century Phra Prang Sam Yod temple. The macaques will get four different servings of food throughout the day on Sunday.

      Video Oktober 2020 (Corona):
Welcome to the Yasathon Rocket Festival, held on the second weekend of May each year. Yasathon is one of Thailand’s provinces, close to the Laos border and infused with the regional Isaan culture. And rockets. The Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival in Yasothon is timed to fit in with the annual wet season. The symbolism is all about reaching for the clouds to break them for the wet season rains. Communities from around the region vie for the prize of the rocket that reaches the highest into the sky. Traditionally the festival is a merit-making ceremony, practiced by ethnic Lao people throughout much of Isan and Laos, to call in the annual monsoonal rains. But much of the traditions have veered a bit off course, much like some of the rockets, to become something much, much bigger. There’s the acrid smell of gun powder in the air, parades, local spicy food, cultural performance, not quite so cultural performances, noise, music, LOUD music, and lots and lots of beer. The festival usually stretches across three days, making it a long weekend with people flocking to Yasathon city from around the province, and beyond. The first night is a party, a big party. The local Isaan traditional Thai country gets fused with more western sounds. There’s lots of dancing, celebration… and BEER. It may be that the purpose of the Friday night parties is to get your ears ready for what’s to follow….

       ⭐  Elefanten-Festival in Surin

      Information:
      Wikipedia (englisch)

The Surin Elephant Round-up is a cultural festival held every year in Surin Province, Isan, Thailand. Usually the event is organized during the third week of November on the weekend. The festival has its origins in the royal hunts which were conducted in Surin Province during medieval times. The indigenous residents of Surin, the Kuy, have been traditional practitioners of corralling elephants and training them as working animals.

When the Ayutthaya Kingdom came into power these hunts were converted into a public extravaganza and wild elephants were replaced with tame ones. The festival, in its contemporary form, was first organized in the 1960s when civil war in Cambodia and the steady decline in economic value of elephants forced the elephant handlers (mahouts) to seek occupations in the entertainment and tourism industry.

The modern two-day event includes a variety of shows displaying the physical prowess and skill of the animals, such as soccer games and tugs of war with the Royal Thai Army. Elephants painting pictures, playing polo, and whirling hula hoops on their trunks are also incorporated into the show. Numerous floats are put on display. The venue for the event, Si Narong Stadium, has been dubbed the "world's largest domestic elephant village" by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. (Wikipedia)

⭐  Naga Fireball Festival บั้งไฟพญานาค in Nong Khai

There is an unusual (some would say paranormal) event that takes place year-round in the Mekong River. Unexplained Naga fireballs บั้งไฟพญานาค Boong Fai Phaya Nak rise out of the river, shoot into the sky and then disappear.

⭐  Inthakin City Pillar Festival
          Chiang Mai

The Inthakhin or Lak Mueang Festival in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand (also known as Sai Khan Dok or Bucha Sao Inthakhin in Thai), starts on the 12th day of the waning moon of the six lunar month and lasts eight days. Centered around Wat Chedi Luang, this is a celebration of Brahmic origin. On the first day, which is called Tam Bun Khan Dok (lit. "Flower Bowl Blessing"), offerings of flowers, candles and incense are made to the city pillar as well as the many other Buddhist and Lanna-era icons. Dancing, musical performances, carnival games, and Thai vendor food is present. This is a very large celebration in which the Chiang Mai citizenry participate.

          In 2012 Inthakhin was on 17–24 May; 2013: 5–12 June; 2014: 25–31 May; 2015: 25–31 May.

The veneration of the city pillar was adopted from a ceremony of the Lawa people (the original inhabitants of northern Thailand) by the Thai Yuan ethnic group who built the city of Chiang Mai upon the foundations of an older Lawa city

            Chiang Mai

            Video Juni 2019:

สืบสานประเพณีเลี้ยงดง is a particularly macabre Chiang Mai festival, not for the squeamish or faint-hearted. It involves the ritual sacrifice of a buffalo and the eating of its raw flesh and blood by a local shaman or medium. It takes place at the full moon of the seventh lunar month, just at the beginning of the rainy season. The ceremony is held at the foot of Doi Kham, a hill about 15 kilometers southwest of the town.

This is not a mass-participation tourist festival like Inthakin, Loy Krathong or Songkran. In recent years it has only been attended by people living in the area around Doi Kham and a few interested foreigners, although senior representatives of local government are often present. It is not officially approved of by the Tourist Authority of Thailand or in any way promoted by them.
